TIGER WOODS AND DEFENDING CHAMPION VIJAY SINGH HIGHLIGHT DEUTSCHE BANK CHAMPIONSHIP
8/6/05 3:00 AM

Worlds Best Players Scheduled To Compete
At Tournament Players Club of Boston

NORTON, MASS. (Aug. 1, 2005) Last year at the Deutsche Bank Championship, Vijay Singh seized the No. 1 world ranking from Tiger Woods, holding him off down the stretch and capturing the second edition of the popular Labor Day weekend event at the Tournament Players Club of Boston.

The 72-hole Championship, which offers a $5.5 million purse, also presents golf fans with the only scheduled Monday finish on the PGA TOUR.

The Deutsche Bank Championship celebrates a third successful year of supporting local and regional charities in conjunction with the Tournament.  The first two years of the Championship brought $2.9 million to the events primary charitable beneficiary, the Tiger Woods Foundation, which promotes childrens health, education and welfare. Further proceeds from the Championship were distributed to a dozen New England-based charities.

Woods (owner of the Masters and British Open titles among his four 2005 victories) and Singh (winner of the Sony Open, Wachovia Championship and Shell Houston Open) will be in the Championship spotlight as fans are treated to another nail-biting Monday finish.

Along with Woods and Singh, many international favorites have made early commitments to play, including 2003 Deutsche Bank Championship winner Adam Scott (Australia), K.J. Choi (South Korea), Aaron Baddeley (Australia), Shigeki Maruyama (Japan) and Trevor Immelman (South Africa). They join the popular John Daly, 2003 PGA Champion Shaun Micheel and New Englanders Brad Faxon, Billy Andrade, Brett Quigley and James Driscoll in the diverse field.

Also scheduled to appear are 2005 first-time winners Sean OHair (John Deere Classic), Peter Lonard (MCI Heritage Classic), Tim Petrovic (Zurich Classic of New Orleans), Jason Bohn (B.C. Open) and Geoff Ogilvy (Chrysler Classic of Tucson).

Immelman and 2004 U.S. Amateur and NCAA Champion Ryan Moore received two of the sponsors exemptions.

"We are thrilled to announce a tournament field that includes the top two players in the world," Championship Executive Director Jay Monahan said. "Our fans appreciate golf at it highest level and we are proud to showcase Tiger and Vijay as well as an impressive international group."

The 2005 Deutsche Bank Championship player field will be finalized at 5 p.m. EDT on Friday, Aug. 26.

Practice rounds for the Deutsche Bank Championship will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 30, and Wednesday, Aug. 31, with a pro-am competition on Thursday, September 1.  The four-day Championship begins Friday, September 2, and continues through Labor Day, Monday, September 5. The first two rounds of the Championship will be covered on USA Network and the final two rounds will be televised on ABC-TV.
