STUDENT DEVELOPMENT

Volunteering has a meaningful, positive impact on your community. But did you know that it could have many benefits for you, too?
You may have heard that volunteering helps you get into college, but keep in mind theyre not just looking for a list of organizations and dates. Colleges want to see a complete picture of you, and real examples of your commitment, dedication, and interests.

Gain Academic Credit. Some schools offer academic credit through service-learning. This is a teaching method that integrates hands-on learning, through service to the community, into the school curriculum.

Send a Signal to Colleges. Colleges pay attention to your life inside and outside the classroom. Your extracurricular activities reveal a great deal about you, such as what your interests are, whether you can manage your priorities and maintain a long-term commitment, what diversity youd bring to the student body, and how youve made a meaningful contribution to something.

Meet Interesting People. Volunteering brings together a variety of people. Both the recipients of your volunteer efforts and your co-workers can be a rich source of insight.

Reasons for Students to Volunteer

  1. Make new connections-when you volunteer, you'll meet lots of interesting people who can be fun new friends and great resources for your future. Also, volunteering can help you think about your own future-you can check out possible college study options and even careers.
  2. Everybody's doing it-not to pressure you or anything, but almost 83 percent of high school seniors in 2001 said they volunteered before college. Plus, more and more schools are requiring community service in order to graduate. So, whether you're forced to or whether you want to (or both), do what's cool (and good) and volunteer.
  3. Get into college-everyone knows that college is now more competitive than ever. Every school loves to see students who take initiative and are involved in their community, specifically students who volunteer. So, even if you think you have better things to do, help others and it will help you.
  4. It's fun-believe it or not, helping others can be tons of fun, especially if you do it with your friends.
  5. Give back-we've given you four others, but this is the reason to volunteer. Make your community a better place. Volunteer. Make a difference.
