The last time Tiger Woods led the first round of a tournament and won was the 2003 Western Open. He's won eight of the last ten times he has either held or shared the first round lead. Tiger Woods on his opening round 65 (-6) and building off an opening round lead... TIGER WOODS: Today was an exciting day because I really played well. As I've been saying for a while, the things I've been working on are heading the right direction. Today was definitely that. I hit just a bunch of good golf shots, made a few putts early in the round and just kept it going. Q. How much of your round was the fact that you were able to keep the ball in the fairway, and you hit a number of really good balls that set you up for the rest of the hole? TIGER WOODS: I did. I drove the ball very well today. Hit a couple of balls, I think three balls in the first cut, so I was never really scrambling for par. You know, that's nice because the greens are so firm out here, that you play from the rough out here all day, it's going to be tough to shoot a good number. Q. How quickly do you get used to a new driver? TIGER WOODS: Certainly just continue in practice. I feel very good with it. If I can just get up there and make the proper golf swing, the club will take care of itself. The ball will get in the way and the ball will go out there in the fairway. It's just a matter of making the proper golf swing. Q. You obviously had some good rounds this year. Talk about the fact that a good round on an opening day making a difference in a tournament to give yourself a foundation in which to build for rest of the weekend? TIGER WOODS: Yeah, I certainly haven't done that very much this year. It's certainly nice to have that opportunity where I have a chance where I don't have to go out there and shoot a round like this just to try and make the cut. It's been nice to go out there and hit just a bunch of good golf shots. Ryan Palmer on his round and his rookie season on the PGA TOUR...
RYAN PALMER: It was a good day, obviously. It was a great day. Last few weeks have been good for me, as well. I've just been struggling putting and just tried to come here this week and have a good time and have fun today. I got off to a good start by making an eagle on 2. I think I bogeyed 6, and then I think the hole-out from the bunker on 7 kind of sparked my round. Then I birdied the next two. It was a fun day. I struggled coming in. Fortunately my short game was in good shape and I made a couple of good putts coming down the stretch. TODD BUDNICK: You joked when you first came in this was a first for you. You did finish sixth on the Nationwide Tour last year. Give us an assessment of your rookie season out here. RYAN PALMER: It's been everything I expected. It's unbelievable, a dream come true. It's been hard times, you put a lot of pressure on yourself to go out; and the magic number is 125, and I try not think about it, but it's there, as a rookie. It's been fun this year. It's been a struggle at times, but then again, I've had a lot of good things coming out of this year. It's getting better and I'm looking forward to that one good week. Mark O'Meara on changing his putting grip and his future playing career...
Mark O'Meara: I'm starting to putt better because of my change in my putter grip, going from conventional, style of grip to my Saw grip, as I have defined it. And my putting, certainly that helps if you can roll the ball with the way the players play out here. Golf is a fickle game and it's been a battle the last two or three years. We've certainly seen some of the older players play pretty well, so hopefully I can keep it up this week. Q. You said a few years ago that you weren't planning to keep on playing after 50; I wonder if you've changed your mind at all? MARK O'MEARA: Look, I love to fly-fish, there's no denying that, everybody knows that. I love to spend time in the river. But if I went fly-fishing every day, I'd probably get sick of that. So I believe that I'll probably continue to play as long as I feel competitive, my body let's me play and my wife will come out with me on the Senior Tour some, I'll play. But I don't really want to go out and sit in a hotel room by myself on the Senior Tour. Once my kids, which will probably happen in the next three years -- I mean, my son is a sophomore, my daughter is a senior, so she's off to college next year. And a couple more years and my son is going to be gone. If my wife comes with me more I'll play some. I imagine I'll play, if the guy upstairs let's me, I'll play not a super full schedule on the Senior Tour, but a limited schedule and I'll base it around the fishing schedule, whenever the fishing is good, I won't be playing golf. When the fishing isn't good, I'll be playing golf. Opening Round Leaders
