Vijay Singh opened his second round with an eagle on the par-4 first hole. He added eight birdies en route to an eight-under-par 63, two-day total 131 (-11), taking the lead away from the World's No. 1 ranked player, Tiger Woods. Singh, looking for his sixth victory of the season, is the top candidate for PGA TOUR Player of the Year. Following his Saturday round, Singh shared his comments with the press. VIJAY SINGH: Yeah, what a start. With a start like that, I guess you can be very aggressive. I was feeling pretty good out there when I started off. I played well yesterday, so I had a good feeling about my swing. After a start like that you can be very aggressive and attack the golf course. I felt being 5-, or 6-under after three holes, I had the green light to go ahead and hit drivers and go at the pins, and I did and I played well all day. Q. Do you like this course for that reason; it allows you to attack and hit the driver? VIJAY SINGH: Yeah, I mean, it's a lot better than last year. It's more softer, not firmness-wise, but the whole terrain around the greens and the fairways. They have taken away a lot of the undulations. It plays pretty good now. If you hit good shots, you'll be rewarded. The way I'm hitting my driver, it sets up. If you hit a good drive on the holes, some of the holes out there, you set yourself up you can attack for the pin. I've been driving the ball well so far. I keep doing that, you know, my chances are good. Q. I know you talked early in the year about wanting to work towards (World's No. 1 Ranking), so how satisfying is it to be that close and possibly do it? VIJAY SINGH: Well, it has been my goal. It was my goal beginning of last year and beginning this year, as well. But it kind of interfered with my play. I was too concerned about that and I wasn't focused on what I was supposed to do. So I totally refocused myself and said, well, let's not worry about the World Ranking. If I play well, win tournaments, it will happen. That's my attitude and that's the way I feel. Tiger Woods carded four birdies on his last six holes to shoot a second round 68 (-3) on Saturday. Woods heads into Sunday's third round tied with PGA TOUR rookie Bill Haas and John Rollins, who are only two shots back at nine under par. Following his round, Woods shared some thoughts on his game and his personal feelings about the PGA TOUR in New England... TIGER WOODS: Well, today was a great way to end the day, with a bomb on 17 and a nice little birdie from the fairway on 18. Overall, I thought I played decent. Didn't play as well as I did yesterday, but controlled the ball where I missed the ball properly. Didn't make any putts on the front nine, but I got it going on the back. Q. How important is it to have a tournament like this in the Boston area to get this market for the PGA TOUR? TIGER WOODS: It's great. They had one before and now it's great to come back here again and have an event like this on a -- this is an under-served market, really. It was great to come back to a market like this, and Boston, it's not too far away. Looking at the crowd that came out, they are huge in the practice rounds. It was pretty neat to have them all out there. Q. You said you were on the committee for your tournament in California. I don't know how much pull you might have here, but would you talk to them about staying here after this year; Is the committee in favor of it? TIGER WOODS: It's definitely in favor of it. We would love to continue our relationship here with this community. Basically, you want to build a connection with the community, and that's what we are trying to do here. Yeah, we would love to stay. MODERATOR: Thank you, Tiger. Top 36-hole Scores 2004 Deutsche Bank Championship TPC of Boston Norton, MA Pos.
